There is so much to see and do in Dublin city that visitors often overlook the opportunity to explore its trendy suburbs.

Time Out, a travel and hospitality group which highlights the best things to do in cities across the world, has recently released its list of the top “vibey, walkable districts”, naming Inchicore at number 25.

Describing it as “unique old-school charm mixed with a very modern energy”, Time Out highlights the old-style pubs like Cleary’s and The Glen of Aherlow alongside new venues such as Stillgarden gin distillery. The distillery makes modern Irish spirits using local ingredients and in a way that has a positive impact in the planet. You can book a tour, tasting or masterclass.

Inchicore was originally a village that grew up around the Richmond Barracks, built in 1810, and retains a village community spirit. Walking tours are available from the Barracks, which now serves as a cultural centre, to uncover the history and heritage of the area.

The neighbourhood is also within easy walking distance of some of Dublin’s top tourist attractions making it a great base for a Dublin break. Phoenix Park, Kilmainham Gaol, the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, the Irish National War Memorial Gardens and the Irish Museum of Modern Art are all within easy reach.

When it’s time to relax, Inchicore offers an eclectic mix of pubs and eateries.

At Rascals Brewing, you can taste a range of its award-winning craft beers while tucking into an artisan pizza. And to find out more, you can go behind-the-scenes on a brewery tour. Tacos Lupillo, selling authentic Mexican street food, is one of the newer food venues, and Kari is a top-notch Indian restaurant. For a more traditional Irish carvery, head to the Black Lion.

Sports fans will enjoy watching a football match in Richmond Park and anyone who fancies a bit of rock climbing will find Ireland’s best bouldering wall at Gravity Climbing Centre.

Inchicore joins the Dublin suburbs of Stoneybatter, Smithfield and Phibsborough, which have previously been listed by Time Out as among the world’s coolest neighbourhoods.

Stoneybatter, Co. Dublin

Stoneybatter was name-checked for being one of Dublin’s most exciting foodie areas while Smithfield was last year named as the second coolest neighbourhood in the world and the number one in Europe. Time Out said Smithfield’s charm was its authenticity reflected in the coexistence of the old and new. It called out The Cobblestone pub as being the heart of traditional Irish music in Dublin and new ventures like the Third Space café.

Phibsborough has made the list twice thanks to its long list of fine pubs and cafes, buzzing atmosphere and also its commendable community spirit.
