Members of the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers – ABPCO – spent time this week in Londonderry, as guests of Tourism Ireland in London.
APBCO is the leading organisation for professional and event organisers in GB. Its members organise an estimated 3,500 conferences and events worldwide each year, for in excess of a massive one million delegates – so this visit was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the city and raise its profile as a premier location for conferences and events.
The group’s itinerary, designed by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, included a walking tour of the city’s historic walls, as well as visits to the Guildhall and the new facilities at Ebrington Square. They also walked across the Peace Bridge and undertook several hotel site inspections, including the City Hotel, the Everglades Hotel and the Beech Hill Country House Hotel.
Commenting on the visit of the ABPCO members, David Boyce, Tourism Ireland’s head of business and sports tourism, said: “We are delighted that the APBCO members chose to visit Londonderry, especially in this special year as the inaugural UK City of Culture. Seeing is believing – so fact-finding visits like this are extremely important to help build awareness of the destination, and the world-class business tourism product on offer, among key influencers and decision-makers involved in conference and event management in GB. It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of the city as a premier location for conferences and events with such an influential group.
“Business tourism is an extremely important, high yield sector which can deliver significant economic benefits and Tourism Ireland is working hard to promote Derry and Northern Ireland as a premier destination for meetings, conferences and events.”
